Aunt MeMe!

Four years ago today, I became an aunt. My nephew Max was born. It was a wonderful day! Susan called before I left for work to say she was in labor and they were headed to the hospital. I could hardly work at all. I was so excited. I left work early and met Peter at the hospital. Still no baby. We chatted with Brian and Susan a bit. The doctor came in and all of the sudden the baby was coming. We listened outside of the door with Susan's mom and were delighted to hear a very manly sounding cry. We already knew that he was a boy. Brian came out a little while later to announce that Maxwell Elias was born weighing 9 lbs 5 oz. What? I was pregnant with Lillian at the time and that totally freaked me out. How could Brian and Susan produce a nine pound baby? Could it happen to me? Well, I came close with Grayson, but that is another story. We got to meet Max and hold him. He was so cute and chubby. He had the most kissable cheeks. Well, getting kisses from Aunt Meme isn't as cool as it used to be. Spiderman and bikes are in first, now.

We got to celebrate with Max last night. He had planned the menu: broccoli/cheese soup. His favorite. I can't believe he is four. He is much more like a little boy than a baby. One of my clearest memories of that day is Brian's face when he told us Max was born. He was so thrilled to be a daddy. I was pretty sad that Brian wasn't here to celebrate Max's birthday this year. I know that this life is supposed to be a blink of an eye compared with eternity, but sometimes it feels like a blink when you are at the beach and your eyes are full of sand. You know you have to blink, but it hurts really bad. It is often said that knowing great sorrow allows you to know great joy. It is a great joy of mine to be an aunt and get to know my nephew, Max. Happy Birthday, Maxers! I love you!

You have a gift with words, Melanie. And the analogy of the sand and blinking eye was perfectly said. Thanks.
